Microsoft slashes Surface RT price by $150

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Microsoft Corp. is slashing the price of its Surface RT tablet by $150 as it fights to increase its tiny share of the booming tablet market.

The cut brings the price of the Surface RT with 32 gigabytes of memory to $349 without a cover, which also acts as a keyboard. Including a cover with a touch-sensitive keyboard, the device comes to $449. The Surface has a 10.1-inch screen measured diagonally.

According to market research firm IDC, Microsoft shipped about a million tablets in the first quarter of 2013. That includes about 260,000 of the slimmed-down RT version and 750,000 of the Pro version of Surface, which is compatible with older Windows programs.

That gave Microsoft a slim 2 percent share of the 49.9 million tablets shipped worldwide. Apple Inc. remained the leader with 39.1 percent and was followed by Samsung Electronics Co., AsusTek Computer Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and Acer Inc. Microsoft was No. 6. Second-quarter figures are not yet out.

The cut, implemented Sunday, comes just days after Microsoft reorganized its corporate structure to become more of a "devices and services" company.

Microsoft has manufactured devices before, such as its Xbox gaming console, but when it began selling Surface tablets in October, the company became a competitor to its many manufacturing partners, who rely on its Windows operating system to power their machines.

Microsoft is trying hard to succeed in tablets because personal computer sales are falling. Research firm Gartner Inc. said worldwide shipments of personal computers fell 11 percent to 76 million in the April-June period, the fifth consecutive quarter of decline and the longest PC slump ever.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Relief may be on the way for airline passengers who can't bear to be separated even briefly from their personal electronic devices. The government is moving toward allowing gate-to-gate use of music players, tablets, laptops, smartphones and other gadgets, although it may take a few months.

Restrictions on cellphone calls and Internet use and transmission are not expected to be changed.

An industry-labor advisory committee was supposed to make recommendations next month to the Federal Aviation Administration on easing restrictions on using electronic devices during takeoffs and landings. But the agency said in a statement Friday the deadline has been extended to September because committee members asked for extra time to finish assessing whether it's safe to lift restrictions.

"The FAA recognizes consumers are intensely interested in the use of personal electronics aboard aircraft; that is why we tasked a government-industry group to examine the safety issues and the feasibility of changing the current restrictions," the statement said.

The agency is under public and political pressure to ease the restrictions as more people bring their devices with them when they fly in order to read e-books, listen to music, watch videos, and get work done.

Technically, the FAA doesn't bar use of electronic devices when aircraft are below 10,000 feet. But under FAA rules, airlines that want to let passengers use the devices are faced with a practical impossibility ? they would have to show that they've tested every type and make of device passengers would use to ensure there is no electromagnetic interference with aircraft radios and electrical and electronic systems.

As a result, U.S. airlines simply bar all electric device use below 10,000 feet. Airline accidents are most likely to occur during takeoffs, landings and taxiing.

Using cellphones to make calls on planes is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. There is concern that making calls from fast-flying planes might strain cellular systems, interfering with service on the ground. There is also the potential annoyance factor ? whether passengers will be unhappy if they have to listen to other passengers yakking on the phone.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that a draft report by the advisory committee indicates its 28 members have reached a consensus that at least some of the current restrictions should be eased.

A member of the committee told The Associated Press that while the draft report is an attempt to reach consensus, no formal agreement has yet been reached. The member was not authorized to discuss the committee's private deliberations and requested anonymity.

There are also still safety concerns, the member said. The electrical interference generated by today's devices is much lower than those of a decade ago, but many more passengers today are carrying electronics.

Any plan to allow gate-to-gate electronic use would also come with certification processes for new and existing aircraft to ensure that they are built or modified to mitigate those risks. Steps to be taken could include ensuring that all navigational antennas are angled away from the plane's doors and windows. Planes that are already certified for Wi-Fi would probably be more easily certified.

Although the restrictions have been broadly criticized as unnecessary, committee members saw value in them.

One of the considerations being weighed is whether some heavier devices like laptops should continue to be restricted because they might become dangerous projectiles, hurting other passengers during a crash, the committee member said. There is less concern about tablets and other lighter devices.

FAA officials would still have the final say. An official familiar with FAA's efforts on the issue said agency officials would like to find a way to allow passengers to use electronic devices during takeoffs and landings the same way they're already allowed to use them when planes are cruising above 10,000 feet. The official requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak by name.

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta told a Senate panel in April that he convened the advisory committee in the hope of working out changes to the restrictions.

"It's good to see the FAA may be on the verge of acknowledging what the traveling public has suspected for years ? that current rules are arbitrary and lack real justification," Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., one of Congress' more outspoken critics of the restrictions, said in a statement. She contends that unless scientific evidence can be presented to justify the restrictions, they should be lifted.

Edward Pizzarello, the co-founder of frequent flier discussion site MilePoint, says lifting the restriction is "long overdue."

"I actually feel like this regulation has been toughest on flight attendants. Nobody wants to shut off their phone, and the flight attendants are always left to be the bad guys and gals," said Pizzarello, 38, of Leesburg, Va.

Actor Alec Baldwin became the face of passenger frustration with the restrictions in 2011 when he was kicked off a New York-bound flight in Los Angeles for refusing to turn off his cellphone. Baldwin later issued an apology to fellow American Airlines passengers who were delayed, but mocked the flight attendant on Twitter.

"I just hope they do the sensible thing and don't allow people to talk on their cellphones during flight," said Pizzarello, who flies 150,000 to 200,000 miles a year. "There are plenty of people that don't have the social skills necessary to make a phone call on a plane without annoying the people around them. Some things are better left alone."

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Protests are planned in more than 80 cities across Brazil Thursday, a week after the start of massive demonstrations that have sent hundreds of thousands of people into the streets denouncing poor public services and government corruption.

The biggest protest will likely shake Rio de Janeiro where protesters say they'll march on the iconic Maracana stadium just as a Confederations cup soccer game is getting under way in the afternoon. Protests are also planned in the country's biggest city, Sao Paulo, and towns all over this continent-sized country.

Several city leaders had already given into initial protester demands to revoke an increase in bus and subway fares and are hoping that anti-government anger cools.

In Sao Paulo, protest organizers said they would turn their demonstration into a party celebrating the lower transit fares. But many believe the protests are no longer just about bus fares and have become a cry for systemic changes in a country that's otherwise seen a decade-long economic boom.

The U.S. Embassy in Brazil wasn't taking any chances: It warned its citizens to stay away from the flurry of protests nationwide.

"It's not really about the price anymore," said Camila Sena, an 18-year-old university student at a Wednesday protest in Rio de Janeiro's sister city of Niteroi. "People are so disgusted with the system, so fed up that now we're demanding change."

Sena added that seeing money poured into soccer stadiums for the current Confederations Cup and next year's World Cup only added fuel to people's anger.

"It's not that we're against the World Cup, not at all. It will bring good things for Brazil. It's just that we're against the corruption that the World Cup has become an excuse for," she said.

Mass protests are rare in this 190 million-person country, with demonstrations generally attracting small numbers of politicized participants.

Many now marching in Brazil's streets hail from the growing middle class, which government figures show has ballooned by some 40 million people over the past decade amid a commodities-driven boom.

While the complaints of protesters are wide-ranging, there have been few answers about how to turn the disgruntlement into a coherent list of demands with which to confront the government.

In announcing the reversal of the fare hike, Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad said it "will represent a big sacrifice and we will have to reduce investments in other areas." He didn't give details on where other cuts would occur.

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes also said his city's fare increase would be rescinded.

Despite that, scattered street demonstrations sprang up Wednesday in some parts of Brazil, including well into the night in Niteroi, as protesters continued to call for better public services in return for high taxes and rising prices.

About 200 people also blocked the Anchieta Highway that links Sao Paulo, the country's biggest city, and the port of Santos before heading to the industrial suburb of Sao Bernardo do Campo on Sao Paulo's outskirts. Another group of protesters later obstructed the highway again.

In the northeastern city of Fortaleza, 15,000 protesters clashed with police who kept them from reaching the Castelao stadium before Brazil's game with Mexico in the Confederations Cup.

"We are against a government that spends billions in stadiums while people are suffering across the country," said Natalia Querino, a 22-year-old student participating in the protest. "We want better education, more security and a better health system."

NVIDIA on Thursday slashed the price of its Shield portable gaming console to $299 from $349 a week before its launch. The Android-powered system has impressive hardware that makes it one of the best portable gaming machines on the market. The Shield features a 5-inch 720p display, a quad-core Tegra 4 processor, a 72-core GPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD slot and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The device is even capable of streaming PC games from a GeForce GTX GPU-powered computer. Despite some of the best portable specs to date, however, the Shield still has a difficult road ahead of it.

NVIDIA is entering a market that is controlled by Nintendo and Sony. The Nintendo 3DS has dominated the portable gaming space since it launched in 2011, having sold more than?31 million units.?The console continues to see impressive growth,?recently outselling Microsoft?s Xbox 360. Despite not having the best graphics or the most impressive hardware, Nintendo continues to thrive thanks to the 3DS?s entry-level price of $169 and massive library of games.

You can argue that NVIDIA and Nintendo aren?t competing for the same audience. While that may be true, the same cannot be said about NVIDIA and Sony. With games like Call of Duty and Assassins Creed, it is clear that the PlayStation Vita is targeted at hardcore gamers. The console has high-end hardware, an extensive gaming library and can be had for $249 ? $50 less than the Shield.

Android has an impressive selection of games, although a majority of them are fairly casual and are better suited for a smartphone or a tablet. The platform has its hardcore offerings such as Shadow Gun and Dead Trigger, but they hardly justify spending $300 on a dedicated Android-powered gaming system. A price drop will likely help the Shield sell more units but it still won?t guarantee the console?s success.

The NVIDIA Shield will be available for purchase beginning June 27th.

Vince Flynn Dies At 47: After Overcoming Dyslexia To Become A Best-Selling Author, Flynn Passed Away Due Prostate Cancer

The New York Times?best-selling author, twin-city native, and "conservative darling," Vince Flynn, died Wednesday at age 47, after a two plus year battle with prostate cancer. Flynn was most well known for the 12-part Mitch Rapp counterterrorism political thriller series, and he sold more than 15 million books in the U.S. alone over the course of his 15-year career.

His publisher, Simon and Shuster, and agency, ICM Partners, told the press that Flynn passed away at United Hospital, in St. Paul, Minn. ? Flynn's birthplace.

"Vince Flynn was an incredibly talented storyteller and a true pioneer in publishing," his agent, Sloan Harris, said in a statement. "Despite his extraordinary talent and success, Vince never lost his common touch. He was a warm, generous and charismatic friend to everyone who had the good fortune to work with him."

Flynn's success story could inspire young writers everywhere. In 1990, Flynn attempted to join the Marines as a pilot, but he was medically disqualified from the Marine Aviation Program because of concussions and seizures he had suffered since a childhood car accident. It was at this point that he began to seriously consider writing a book.

In a 2009 interview with Glenn Beck, Flynn admitted that as a young adult he realized that he had dyslexia, a learning disorder that makes reading comprehension extremely difficult and can affect a person's ability to learn effectively. In the interview, Flynn said that in the early 90s, he forced himself into a daily writing and reading routine in an effort to overcome the condition.

"I started reading everything I could get my hands on, Hemingway, Ludlum, Clancy, Tolkien, Vidal," he said. "I read fiction, nonfiction, anything, but I especially loved espionage."

Flynn believed his dyslexia was a gift: the thing that drove him to become an author and a success. And it is true; while dyslexia can be frustrating early on in life ? particularly during grade school and middle school when spelling and reading are paramount ? it can certainly be overcome. Among other success stories, Keira Knightley, Whoopi Goldberg, Ingvar Kamprad (the founder of IKEA), Agatha Christie, and Charles Schwab were all diagnosed with dyslexia at some point in their lives.

Flynn pounded away, writing and reading every day to overcome his dyslexia. He was working as a bartender at the time he completed his first novel, Term Limits. He sent it out to every publisher he could think to contact, and ended up with 60 rejection letters.?Finally, after five years, Flynn made a bold move: taking an uncommon route at the time, he decided to self-publish the novel in 1997. The novel shot up to number one in the Twin Cities area, and soon enough he had an agent and a two-book deal.

His next novel was the first in the Mitch Rapp series, Transfer of Power, and also began a decades-long streak of publishing success. His ninth novel, Protect and Defend, reached the top of the New York Times bestseller list.

The Mitch Rapp series is notable for its use of the war on Islamic terror as a framing device for the ongoing narrative of counterterrorist espionage. Flynn was critical of Islamic fundamentalism from the earliest books ? even before 9/11 ? and during the George W. Bush presidency. The author was often lauded by the right for his research and prescience about the rise of Islamic terrorism; Rush Limbaugh called Lynn "one of the smartest guys I've ever met," and, according to Flynn's website, a high-ranking CIA official told his people, "I want you to read Flynn's books and start thinking about how we can more effectively wage this war on terror."

For all the support he received from outspoken conservatives, Flynn was quick to point out that his hero was "neutral" and that he did not necessarily agree with everything the Republican party stood for.

In February of 2011, Flynn sent out a fan newsletter announcing that he was being treated for Stage III prostate cancer. Prostate cancer varies in severity ? some cases are isolated to the prostate and can be effectively treated, while others spread rapidly and aggressively. In Stage III prostate cancer, the cancer has already spread beyond the prostate to nearby tissue.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men. The National Cancer Institute estimates?that there will be 238,590 new cases of prostate cancer in 2013, and 29,720 prostate cancer-related deaths. For reference, the 2013?estimates for breast cancer?are 232,340 new diagnoses, and 39,620 related deaths.

Flynn remained upbeat, writing to fans that it was "not a battle I plan on losing." The title of his last book, to be published posthumously this coming fall:?The Survivor. Unfortunately, Flynn's cancer worsened, and his condition deteriorated, finally leading to his death early Wednesday morning.

He is survived by his wife Lysa, and their three children.

Swype Adds Crowd-Sourced Dictionaries for Better Word Prediction

Android: Swype, one of your favorite Android keyboards has been pressed to update in the face of heavy competition from other keyboards. This week the Swype team announced that the latest version of Swype no longer requires you sign up and register to download it, and includes a new "living language" feature that rolls in crowd-sourced dictionaries, so words like "hashtag" and "instagram" are already in your dictionary without you having to add them.

The new "living language" feature automatically updates your dictionary periodically with popular words added by other users. Think terms like "Roku" and "CES" without having to add them yourself first. In addition to crowdsourced dictionaries, the update also improves the "hotwords" feature, which automatically adds words to your dictionary imported from newspapers, magazines, and other popular media outlets.

Finally, the new Swype beta includes voice and text support for several new languages and improved cloud support for personal and custom dictionaries. This means it's easier for you to add your own custom words, then have those words backed up so you can get them on other Android devices running Swype.
