Super Bowl ads have become an early show via social media

The measure of the magnitude the Super Bowl has become as a cultural event is that the hype for the game is matched by the hype for the commercials that will air during the game.

For some the anticipation of the ads tops that for the game. Viewers who normally reach for he mute button during commercials view the Super Bowl ads as a big part of the show.

In the social media age, it isn?t even necessary to wait for them. Many that will make their television debut Sunday during Super Bowl XLVI have been playing for weeks on YouTube, Facebook and elsewhere on the Web.

Some folks like an early peek at their Christmas presents, but it does take some of the luster off Christmas morning. And what?s the fun of wondering which sponsors will roll out the most entertaining commercials when you?ve already seen all of them? There will be plenty of kill-joys at parties who will spoil the suspense for those who haven?t seen them.

Also seems odd that sponsors who will be paying $3.5 million for a 30-second spot in this year?s game would want to play their hand early. Marketing experts say that companies get more mileage from their investment by making the ads available early.

The ad game has gone from McLuhan?s ?medium is the message? to immediacy of the media. The idea is to get it out early and have it go viral well before game day.

That has happened this year with Matthew Broderick?s ?Ferris Bueller? reprise for Honda and one with Jerry Sienfeld vying to own the first Acura NSX. Ads with a shirtless David Beckham, dogs and polar bears have already have already received considerable play.

It remains to be seen if the strategy pays off for those writing the big checks to get their message across to the massive Super Bowl audience. If it expands their reach, sponsors could care less if it takes some of the fun out of the game.

According to a survey by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association conducted by BIGinsight, 173 million people will watch the game Sunday, up from an estimated 171 million last year. Consumer spending for the Super Bowl will also reach an all-time high, with the average game-watcher expected to shell out $63.87 on related merchandise, apparel and snacks, up from $59.33 last year. Total Super Bowl spending is expected to reach $11.0 billion.

Nearly three-quarters of viewers (73 percent) say they reard the commercials as entertainment. The survey found 16.9 percent say the commercials make them aware of the advertisers? brand and another 8.4 percent say the commercials influence them to buy products from advertisers ? the highest percentage reported in the survey?s eight-year history.

?Television?s influence on consumers? purchasing decisions is clearly not suffering from web, social and multichannel influencers ? in fact, it seems to be more important than ever before,? said Pam Goodfellow, Consumer Insights Director, BIGinsight. ?Though commercials are king on Super Bowl Sunday, we?ll likely also see many companies use more cross-channel methods to draw viewers? attention, including drawing viewers to their own website and social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.?

Able Planet Clear Harmony NC1050

Previous iterations of Able Planet's Clear Harmony noise canceling headphone line could easily be mistaken for a pair of Bose headphones if you blurred your eyes. Bose's active noise cancellation, most recently used in the QuietComfort 15 ($299.95, 4 stars), is something of an industry standard, partially because Bose made the first ever consumer-level noise canceling headphones, and also because noise cancellation technology is already good, so making improvements is slow and subtle. Thus, a three year-old Bose headphone pair is still an excellent noise canceling option?but others are catching up. Able Planet's latest noise canceling headphones, the Clear Harmony NC1050, at $349 (direct), are priced to compete with the Bose QC15 and QuietComfort 3 ($349, 4 stars). While its noise cancellation performance is not quite as top-notch as Bose's, the NC1050 definitely wins the battle in another very important category: audio performance.

Design
Not much separates the NC1050?visually?from the overcrowded field of Bose competitors. Able Planet ditched the typical chrome and brushed metal accents, opting instead for a matte black design with some nice carbon fiber trim on the ear cups. (Able Planet also offers the NC1150?identical in audio performance and price, but with a glossy black finish instead.) The headband and earcups are luxuriously cushioned and quite comfortable. On a recent five hour flight, I wore the NC1050 for the duration and forgot I had the headphones on.

The right earcup houses the AAA battery compartment and the power control switch. This is also where the detachable audio cable connects to the headphones. The cable has a rather bulky in-line volume control pod?for its size, you'd hope for iPhone playback controls, but you'll only find a volume dial here. (Since it's detachable, however, you can opt to upgrade to an Able Planet "Made for iPhone" cable.) The NC1050 ships with a black, zip-up hard case, an airline jack adapter, a ?-inch adapter for larger headphone jacks, a detachable audio cable, and two AAA batteries.

Performance
Unlike Bose's Quiet Comfort line, the NC1050 works in passive mode, when the noise cancellation is not engaged, so you can listen to audio without draining the battery. This is a nice advantage over Bose, but most noise cancellation options these days have this feature, such as the Sony MDR-NC200D Digital Noise Canceling Headphones ($199, 3 stars), so it's not really a unique advantage. As with most models that play passively and actively, the audio sounds more powerful, with better bass response and a higher overall volume level in active mode. In passive mode, however, the NC1050 still sounds quite good, it just lacks the punch provided by the batteries.

On songs with deep bass, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," the NC1050 does not distort in passive or active listening modes, not even at top volume. This is to be expected from a $350 pair of headphones, but it's impressive because Able Planet does not employ any of the digital signal processing you'll often find in headphones like the Bowers & Wilkins P5 Mobile Hi-Fi Headphones ($299.95, 4.5 stars). Digital signal processing is a way for manufacturers to dynamically "limit" lower frequencies that threaten to distort. Audiophiles tend to dislike such tinkering with the purity of the audio signal, but will have little to thumb their noses at with the NC1050, as Able Planet manages to provide very deep bass response without any distortion and without employing digital signal processing.

Even better, beyond the clean bass response, the NC1050 sounds very clear in the mids and highs, and the bass, while intense, never feels like an over-the-top enhancement of the audio. Rather, it sounds as if there's a well-tuned subwoofer in the mix. Instrumental pieces, like John Adams "The Chairman Dances," get a nice bit of low-end presence on larger percussion hits and lower-register strings. Bill Callahan's unique baritone vocals are delivered with a crispness and a resonance that make them stand out on his latest record, "Apocalypse," while the drums underneath his voice in the mix sound almost thunderous. In short, the NC1050 sounds intense and articulate. Audiophiles may still not get on-board with the boosted bass, but in the noise-cancellation field, there are few models that offer tremendous sound performance without exceeding this price point.

The noise cancellation works quite well, too. On the plane, it eliminated much of the drone of the engines, and in other environments, it capably reduced the overall ambient distractions. Bose's noise cancellation circuitry still seems a bit quieter than the NC1050's, which can occasionally seem like it's adding a bit of subtle, high-end hiss?not unlike what you'd hear on an old cassette tape?to the mix. Generally speaking, however, the NC1050 is a strong noise-cancellation option, and when you factor in its strong audio performance, it becomes an intriguing competitor to the Quiet Comfort 15.

If both the Bose and Able Planet options are out of your budget, perhaps consider the Phiaton PS 20 NC ($149, 4 stars). It's an in-ear option, which may not appeal to everyone, and its noise-cancellation performance is not really on the same level as the NC1050 or the QC15, but for the price, it offers reasonably good cancellation?and some extra passive isolation because of the secure in-ear fit. Paired with its quality audio performance, the PS 20 NC is probably the best budget noise-canceling option. If your budget allows, though, the NC1050's audio performance makes it worthy of your consideration if you're looking to dampen the din around you.

U.S. plans to halt Afghan combat role early (Reuters)

BRUSSELS/KABUL (Reuters) ? The United States took Kabul by surprise by laying out plans to end its Afghan combat role earlier than expected, just after the leak of a secret report that the Taliban is confident of regaining control of the country.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said late on Wednesday the United States would stop taking the lead role in combat operations before the end of 2013 and step into a supporting role as it winds down its longest war.

He said U.S. forces would remain "combat-ready" but would largely shift to a train-and-assist role as Afghan forces take over responsibility for security ahead of a 2014 deadline for full Afghan control.

The announcement, ahead of a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, was greeted with surprise in Kabul, where a senior Afghan security official said the move "throws out the whole transition plan."

"The transition has been planned against a timetable and this makes us rush all our preparations," the official said.

"If the Americans withdraw from combat, it will certainly have an effect on our readiness and training, and on equipping the police force," he said, adding that his government had not been informed of the change in plans.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen insisted there was no change in NATO's plans and it expected responsibility for security to be handed over to the Afghan security forces by mid-2013 and for them to have full control at the end of 2014.

"It is of course of crucial importance that this change of role takes place in a coordinated manner," he said, emphasizing that the changes of role would have to take into account "the actual security situation on the ground."

CLASSIFIED REPORT

Britain said on Thursday NATO's strategy has not changed and alliance forces will continue to operate in a combat role.

"They (ISAF forces) will be operating in 2014 in a combat role. But it will be a supporting role," a spokesman for Prime Minister David Cameron said, referring to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

Britain has 9,500 troops in Afghanistan as part of the 130,000-strong NATO-led force. Cameron has announced that Britain will pull out 500 soldiers from Afghanistan this year but has not set out troop reduction plans beyond that. He plans to end Britain's combat role by the end of 2014, leaving some troops behind to train and mentor Afghan forces.

Panetta's announcement came just after British media published excerpts of a classified U.S. report saying that the Taliban, backed by Pakistan, remained confident of regaining control in Afghanistan despite a decade of NATO efforts.

U.S. officials said the timing of the transition to Afghan security lead would be discussed at NATO on Thursday and Friday. They said the process envisioned continued combat operations by coalition forces in support of the Afghans as needed.

"The idea we're discussing with our allies is to transition lead responsibility for combat operations to the Afghan National Security Forces, but ISAF forces would still be expected to conduct combat operations alongside our Afghan partners," a U.S. defense official said on condition of anonymity.

Norwegian Defense Minister Espen Barth Eide said he was "not alarmed" by Panetta's remarks and "we should all now prepare for a decent transition."

A European NATO diplomat said Panetta's remarks were the first time he had gone on record with U.S. plans "but it's not a change in NATO strategy."

"It is for the U.S. to decide, but he has not said explicitly that the U.S. will end its combat role in 2013. There will be a shift, but he hasn't said when the shift will end."

CONCERN AMONG AFGHANS

The United States, which led the Western invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, has previously said it would withdraw most combat troops by the end of 2014. Panetta said on Wednesday the U.S. had not made any decisions on troop levels for 2013 but Washington did aim to withdraw its forces by the end of 2014.

"Our goal is to complete all of that transition in 2013 and then hopefully by mid- to the latter part of 2013 we'll be able to make a transition from a combat role to a training, advise-and-assist role," Panetta said.

A decision to end the U.S. lead role in combat operations could give President Barack Obama an election-year lift by enabling him to point to progress in Afghanistan.

But Panetta's remarks about the transition have already drawn criticism from Obama's chief rival for the presidency and Republican lawmakers in Congress who worry the administration is moving before the Afghans are ready to take control.

The remarks also prompted concern among Afghans who fear a return to Taliban rule and hope that reconciliation between all parties would deliver a better alternative.

Hotel waiter Yama, 19, expressed alarm at the prospect of an early end to a U.S. combat role. "Everything Afghanistan has built during the past years would be destroyed, robbed and sold to neighboring countries," he said.

The United States has been trying to draw the Taliban into reconciliation talks with the Afghan government. But a key part of its strategy has been to increase military pressure on the Taliban to persuade it to join peace talks.

Washington believes Afghanistan cannot be pacified without strong cooperation with Pakistan, but ties have been damaged by events, including the unilateral U.S. raid that killed Osama bid Laden on Pakistani soil in May last year, and a NATO cross-border raid that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in November.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said after a visit to Kabul this week that "a lot of ill will had faded."

While cautioning that a nascent peace process is far from producing breakthroughs, she said Islamabad would encourage insurgent groups like the Haqqani network and the Taliban to lay down their arms and pursue peace if asked by Afghanistan.

Pakistan has long been accused of using militant groups as proxies in Afghanistan to counter the influence of its rival India there, allegations it denies.

Overweight mothers who smoke while pregnant can damage baby's heart, study finds

ScienceDaily (Jan. 30, 2012) ? Mothers-to-be who are both overweight and smoke during their pregnancy risk damaging their baby's developing heart, finds research published online in Heart.

Congenital heart abnormalities are some of the most common defects found at birth, with around eight in every 1000 babies affected. A likely cause is only found in 15% of cases.

The authors base their findings on an analysis of almost 800 babies and foetuses who were born with congenital heart abnormalities, but no other defects, between 1997 and 2008.

These babies were compared with 322 children and foetuses who were born with chromosomal abnormalities, but without any heart defects.

The analysis pointed to an enhanced damaging effect for a combination of overweight and smoking as opposed to one of these factors alone, after taking account of influential factors, such as the mother's alcohol consumption and educational attainment.

Mums to be who both smoked and were overweight, with a BMI of 25 or more, were more than 2.5 times as likely to have a child with a congenital heart defect as women who either smoked or were overweight, but not both.

The risk of outflow tract obstructive abnormalities, whereby blood flow from the ventricles of the heart to the pulmonary artery or aorta is reduced/blocked, more than tripled in babies born to overweight mums who smoked while pregnant.

"These results indicate that maternal smoking and overweight may both be involved in the same pathway that causes congenital heart defects," write the authors.

While the exact mode of action is not clear, they point to disturbances in plasma cholesterol, which is independently associated with obesity and smoking, and which results in lower levels of "good" cholesterol and higher levels of "bad" cholesterol.

The findings add to the growing body of evidence for the links between smoking and overweight during pregnancy with, variously, miscarriage/stillbirth, stunted growth, and premature birth, say the authors.
